Artist Highlight: Novilee Magpali

How do you see your art connecting with healing or justice?

I create zines that focus mainly on my relationships with others as a means of processing my own emotions and connecting with other people in the present. I have several new mini zines that are about the next stage of my life as a college graduate and the relationships I have formed and lost as a result of this next stage of my life. Creating these zines have helped me cope with these new changes as well as connect with my friends who have all moved back to different hometowns.

What inspires your art or guides your creative practice?

I use clay, paper, and textiles to explore my childhood memories, my Filipino-American heritage, and my familial, platonic, and romantic relationships. I use artwork and art objects as a vehicle to honor my connections to the past and those who have molded my person. My work reflects my life, which is boldly defined by my motto: "To be a mosaic of everyone l've loved.”

What kind of artistic collaborations are you open to?

I am open to any types of collaboration! (Ex: film, mixed media, performance, book arts/zines, etc.)

How can people support, buy, or experience your work?
