How do you see your art connecting with healing or justice?

ree

I think a lot about what it would mean to be able to make art about the parts of our identity that are silly, tender, absurd, or just plain weird, without worrying about whether it is an accurate or "respectable" representation of the communities we belong to. I'm interested in making art about us being our messy everyday selves, and I think there is a lot of healing and justice in that -- when we turn the gaze inwards and examine our humanities in ways that don't require us to be over-explaining or messaging to a dominant culture.

What inspires your art or guides your creative practice?

I'm constantly inspired by any creative work (art, music, dance) that seems to be exploring the idea that we live on a shared planet, and that there is so much beyond our immediate context that will reward us for learning about it. At the same time, I also find myself fascinated by work about the local and the immediate: what makes our everyday lives and struggles so interconnected and so important. I'm constantly trying to find a balance between these two ways of examining our realities in my own work.
